Book Club
The next Book Club is taking a summer sabbatical. The next meeting will be on Monday, September 19, at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom co-leaders Marjie Marion and Marian Ehrenberg have announced.
Readers are asked to choose a book from a selection of Ukrainain-related books on the topics of geography, history, fiction, poetry, and anthology. Discussion will revolve around impressions of the Ukrainain experience as perceived through the books.
Dining on the 6th
You’re invited to join with the Friendship Force for Dining on the 6th. The Saturday evening dinner will feature individual ordering from the menu and gathering in a private room.
The menu at Benvenuto’s offers a diverse selection of traditional Italiam favorites, including made-from-scratch meatballs topped with homemade marinara, baked tetrazzini, scratch made alfredo, lasagna, chicken parmigiana, calzones, bruschetta, wood fired pizza, warm focaccia bread, and so much more.
They offer starters, soups & salads, pastas (priced from $15-$28), pizza, calzones, sandwiches, steaks, salmon, cod, sides, and desserts. Non- alcoholic beverages are $3 or $3.50.

Trivia Night
The next trivia night will be on Tuesday, July 19th via ZOOM.
The fun is scheduled from 4:30 to 6:00 pm. The zoom meeting will open at 4:00 to allow people to chat before the contest and sign in by 4:30.

World Refugee Day Panel Discussion
Jewish Social Services (JSS) of Madison is pleased to invite you to our World Refugee Day Panel Discussion.
This special event will take place in-person for the first time since 2019. Each year on June 20, the world celebrates World Refugee Day. This year JSS Madison will celebrate the communities that are growing and thriving as refugee families resettle in and around Madison.
The theme this year as directed by the United Nations: “Every person on this planet has a right to seek safety – whoever they are, wherever they come from and whenever they are forced to flee.”

Friendship Force Annual Picnic
It’s time for the Friendship Force Annual Summer Potluck Picnic Buffet!
Please provide a dish to share for the potluck such as potato salad, vegetable salad or platter, baked beans, hot dish, meat dish, hors d’oeuvres, chips and dip, fruit tray, variety of desserts, etc.
Please bring your own beverage – park rules prohibit glass containers and alcohol. Paper plates, utensils, napkins, and cups will be provided.
Easy directions: From Sherman Avenue across from the lock, turn onto North Thornton Avenue which runs parallel with the Yahara River. Drive to the parking area at the end of the road. Follow the sidewalk to the shelter.
Reservations are due by Monday, June 20, so that tables and seating can be prepared. Please indicate your potluck contribution when you make your reservation with Gail Holmes at glholmes@wisc.edu or phone 608-249-1846.

Dining on the 6th – Dorf Haus
It’s time for a good Wisconsin Friday Fish Fry! Members are invited to the Dorf Haus Supper Club in Roxbury on May 6. The reservation is for 4:45 pm; the bar opens at 4 pm in a casual atmosphere. The fish fry menu is baked, breaded or fried haddock with the usual sides, from $13 to $15, The full food menu is also offered.
Come for the food and stay for the “Gemutlichkeit.” Dorf Haus is approximately 25 minutes west of Madison located in the quaint village of Roxbury across from historic St. Norbert’s Church at 8931 County Hwy Y. Drive west on Hwy 12 until you reach Hwy KP. Turn right (North) off Hwy 12 and proceed 2 miles to Hwy Y and turn left. The restaurant is a short distance on the left.

Book Club – All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
The final book club meeting before taking a break for the summer will be on May 23. The group will discuss All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr. which is “…a stunningly ambitious and beautiful novel about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II…Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another.”

South Korean Student Discusses Korean Culture
On Tuesday, May 3rd, from 5-6 pm. Jihyo Ha, a chemical engineering student from Busan, South Korea, will showcase Korean culture in a virtual presentation. She will focus on her experiences in the US and compare these with life in her home town—things that surprised her. As time allows, she will showcase aspects of Korean culture. She writes, “I am bringing some photos, short videos, or simple pop quizzes/questions of the prior knowledge that the people may have about South Korea and would love to hear their opinions too!”
